Cleaning

Cleaning removes organic and inorganic residues such as blood, tissue or saliva. It is the first and most important step in reprocessing: residues can enclose pathogens and prevent disinfection and sterilisation from working.

Cleaning can be manual or mechanical. Mechanical cleaning in a thermal disinfector is reproducible and can be validated. Hollow instruments are also cleaned on the inside via the injection system. Dried-on residues are hard to remove, so instruments should be reprocessed as soon as possible after use.
