Disinfection

Disinfection means killing or inactivating pathogens to the point where an object or surface can no longer cause infection. Unlike sterilisation, it does not necessarily cover all microorganisms.

A distinction is made between:

chemical disinfection with disinfectants
thermal disinfection with hot water or steam
chemo-thermal processes, e.g. in a WD-E

In the practice, disinfection covers hands, skin and mucous membranes, surfaces, floors and instruments. The products and procedures are laid down in the hygiene plan. For instruments, mechanical thermal disinfection in a thermal disinfector is preferred because it is reproducible and can be validated.
